Carmarthenshire Deserves Better: My Concerns Over the Closure of UWTSD’s Swimming Pool

I am deeply disappointed by the decision to close the swimming pool at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) in Carmarthen. This facility has served generations of local people since the 1970s and its loss will be felt across our community.

What makes this decision even more frustrating is the apparent lack of meaningful consultation. The announcement has come during the summer holiday period when students are away from campus and many regular users are not actively engaged with university activities. I am confident that, had students been properly consulted, many would have voiced strong opposition to the closure. For a facility that has been such an important part of university and community life for decades, local people deserved the opportunity to have their say before any final decision was made.

This closure comes at a time when politicians across Wales are rightly promoting greater participation in sport, healthier lifestyles and improved access to swimming. That is why the loss of yet another swimming facility feels like a slap in the face for Carmarthenshire.

Swimming is not simply a leisure activity. It is a vital life skill that every child should have the opportunity to learn. The pool has played an important role in teaching local children to swim, supporting schools, clubs and individual learners alike. It has also been a valuable resource for physical health, rehabilitation and mental wellbeing for people of all ages.

Residents in rural areas already face significant challenges when it comes to accessing sports and leisure facilities. Every closure means longer travel times, reduced opportunities and greater barriers for those who want to stay active. Instead of seeing facilities disappear, we should be working to protect and expand access to them.

Since news of the closure emerged, I have been contacted by a number of concerned constituents who are worried about the impact this decision will have on families, schools, swimming clubs and the wider community. In response, I have written to the university seeking clarification on the reasons for the closure, the process that led to the decision and what consideration has been given to mitigating its effects on local users.

Carmarthenshire deserves better. Communities should not be expected to lose valuable public facilities without proper engagement or a clear plan for the future. I will continue to press the university for answers and engage with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that the concerns of local people are heard loud and clear.
