Cardiff Bay’s latest announcement of a £200,000 pilot scheme for Community Focused Schools is a drop in the ocean for families and teachers across Sir Gaerfyrddin. After decades of Labour and Plaid Cymru mismanagement, our schools are suffering from a catastrophic decline in standards, highlighted by Wales’ worst-ever PISA results. While the Cabinet Secretary promises to tackle school discipline and mental health through new administrative frameworks, headteachers from Llanelli to Llandovery are struggling to cover basic classes due to acute teacher shortages. Shuffling paper between local authority officers and multi-agency committees will not put qualified subject teachers at the front of our classrooms.

At Reform UK, we believe in slashing top-heavy education bureaucracy and driving every single penny directly to the frontline. Instead of creating another tier of pilot projects and experimental policy frameworks that have driven our PISA rankings down, government money should be used to support disciplined classroom environments, recruit specialist teachers, and strip away unnecessary administrative burdens from overworked staff. Our schools must return to traditional academic rigor, literacy, and numeracy, rather than acting as overburdened social work hubs for failed central government strategies.
Demanding Action for Sir Gaerfyrddin
Parents and pupils in Carmarthenshire deserve direct accountability and immediate support, not endless trials that stall real reform. I am calling on the Welsh Government to scrap these piecemeal pilots and immediately redirect funding directly to local school budgets. It is time to empower our headteachers with robust disciplinary authority, guarantee zero tolerance on classroom disruption, and ensure that rural Carmarthenshire schools receive their fair share of frontline educational investment.
