Tourism is the lifeblood of Carmarthenshire’s rural economy. From our local pubs and family farms to independent shops, temporary summer camping brings vital visitor pounds directly into our communities.
The Welsh Government claimed they were helping the sector by extending pop-up campsite rules from 28 to 60 days. But as usual, the fine print tells a very different story:
❌ The 100m “Buffer” Rule: Pubs and small venues can’t host campers if a neighbouring building is nearby.
❌ Blanket Flood Bans: Landowners are banned from using fields in flood zones, even when they don’t flood in summer and have operated safely for years.
❌ Endless Bureaucracy: New council approvals for access and wastewater mean “permitted development” exists in name only.
Instead of cutting red tape to help rural businesses thrive, Cardiff Bay has created a bureaucratic obstacle course that drives tourist spending away and discourages local diversification.
Reform UK believes in trusting local businesses, cutting needless regulation, and backing our rural tourism economy. It’s time for pragmatic, common-sense planning rules that work for Carmarthenshire, not against it.
