Senedd Member Gareth Beer recently visited ChooseLife in Llanelli to observe firsthand the frontline support provided by the long-standing community charity. Operating in the heart of the town for nearly three decades, ChooseLife offers essential crisis intervention, hot meal services, supported accommodation, and recovery pathways for individuals facing hardship and substance misuse in areas such as Station Road and Tyisha.
During the visit, Gareth engaged with Chief Executive Alan Andrews to explore how the Senedd can better support grassroots initiatives. The discussion focused on several key priorities:
Evaluating Positive Impact: Looking into the reach of ChooseLife’s food and housing support, its preventative work enterprise programmes, and how long-term recovery is sustained beyond crisis intervention.
Overcoming Funding & Housing Barriers: Addressing the need for direct funding stream alignment for “coalface” frontline services, as well as tackling local planning and rental market shortages for 1-bedroom supported housing.
Strengthening Community & Systemic Ties: Discussing ongoing efforts to resolve local residential concerns, foster community integration, and break down multi-agency bottlenecks across local government, emergency services, and health boards.
Following the visit, Gareth reaffirmed his commitment to raising these grassroots policy priorities in the Senedd, advocating for direct revenue funding for frontline providers, planning reforms to accelerate supported housing, and tighter multi-agency integration to address complex social needs across Wales.
